As we all know, Vitiligo is skin discolouration. The exact cause of this disease is not known as yet. Neither is it proved that this disease is hereditary. However, in our society this is treated as a stigma. The affected patient faces all kinds of problems including non acceptance, problem during marriage etc. In fact the mental tension and agony also affects close family members. In other words the whole family is affected. As we all know, one of our esteemed club member, Dr Maya Tulpule is associated with the NGO ‘Shweta Association’ a non profit charitable registered trust. The NGO works towards helping the vitiligo patients with psychological help, different forms of treatments, and general awareness of the subject in the society. Some time back they had organized ‘Run for Vitiligo’ program in which our club members had participated. One of the recent treatments in treating Vitiligo is subjecting the patient to Ultraviolet Rays exposure in a closed chamber. UV- A type rays are being used for long time now, however some patients develop reaction to this therapy. Since past 5-6 years in western countries, such patients are exposed to UV- B rays. In Pune there are only a few machines in KEM hospital, Sasson Hospital,Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and with some private doctors. A typical patient is subjected to UV- B rays for average 15 minutes two times a week. The dosage time varies from patient to patient. Average cost of treatment in semiprivate hospitals (the ones which runs on partial funding) is RS 150/- per sitting or Rs 300/- a week. The private ones cost two- three times of this. In most of the hospitals this facility is not available after 4pm and patients have to travel there taking out time from their work. We will offer this facility from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday. Treatment will be free of cost for first 6 months & a nominal fees will charged thereafter. The Project will be run on a no profit no loss basis. IPP Rtn Milind Ghaisas was the convener of this Project.
